Why you need to exfoliate

January 18, 2016

Did you know that your skincare routine may be missing one vital component? Cleansing and moisturising will benefit your skin, but the inclusion of an exfoliant into your skincare routine can completely transform your complexion.

What is an exfoliant?

An exfoliating product removes dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. A skincare exfoliant in liquid form is formulated with alpha hydroxy acids which remove dead skin cells to promote cell renewal. Alternatively, an exfoliating scrub or cloth can be buffed into the skin to remove dead skin cells.

You should only use a facial exfoliant on your face and not one that is tailored to your body as these are much more abrasive.

Why is exfoliation important?

A build-up of dead skin cells causes your complexion to look dull and uneven, so the use of an exfoliant is highly beneficial.

Your skin will appear luminous

If you want a radiant complexion that appears more youthful then introduce an exfoliant into your skincare routine. As we age, skin cells turnover at a slower rate, causing a build-up of dead skin cells on the surface of your complexion. An exfoliant will promote skin cell renewal and create luminosity.

Impurities are removed

If you have oily skin, dead skin cells, and sebum block pores which lead to blemishes occurring. An exfoliant removes dead skin cells, preventing pores from becoming blocked. The result is a clearer complexion.

Your skin will look younger

Regular exfoliation creates smoother, softer and healthier skin. If you want a younger appearance then remember to exfoliate.

You’ll get better results from your skincare

A softer and smoother complexion allows your skincare products to absorb better into the skin. Ensure you use a moisturiser after exfoliating to keep your complexion hydrated.

Discovering the perfect exfoliant

You may want to choose a liquid or scrub exfoliant tailored to your skin type. Oily and combination skin types should use a gentle exfoliant that will cleanse, as well as exfoliating. Dry and mature skin types should choose a hydrating exfoliant which will moisturise. Those with sensitive skin should opt for a very gentle exfoliating product that won’t be too harsh on the complexion. One suggestion is the griffin+row exfoliate cloth, which is made from 100% organic muslin cotton cloth and provides a gentle and natural exfoliation. All skin types can use this effective exfoliant to reveal healthy, radiant skin.

How often should you exfoliate?

If you are using an exfoliating cloth, you can use it daily alongside your favourite cleanser. Simply apply your cleanser to your face and remove it with the dampened cloth. The cloth creates an exfoliating action over your complexion and will leave your skin smoother and brighter. Follow with your favourite toner, serum, and moisturiser.

If you are using an exfoliating scrub or liquid cleanser then use twice to three times per week. These are likely to be more abrasive than a cloth, so should be limited in their use.
