Spotlight on Pollution – Part 2

Nourish creates a barrier against pollution on your skin. Air pollution is created by industrial and car emissions. Pollution is most concentrated in cities, but is also spread by wind and rain to rural areas. Pollution is comprised of particles that are so small that they are invisible to the naked eye. Scientists refer to them as “particulate matter” or “PM”.

1. Particulate matter (PM) penetrates in between the cells of the epidermis and into the pores. 2. Once here, these foreign particles activate a cascade of destructive biological reactions that measurably result in age spots and wrinkles. A typical brown age spot can be seen in illustration 2.

Antioxidants are the skin’s defence against free radicals. They are contained naturally in the skin. But when pollution levels increase, our skins natural defence mechanisms are overloaded and premature ageing is initiated.

griffin+row Nourish contains centess+complex, a cocktail of pure plant extracts known for their antioxidant and regenerative properties. Nourish absorbs deeply into the epidermis and forms an antioxidant barrier to support the skin’s natural defence against pollution.

Why two different moisturisers?

The griffin+row skincare routine contains two moisturisers, Nourish and Enrich, which can be used differently. Our general recommendation is that you use Nourish during the day and Enrich as a night cream. For this reason, most people use both moisturisers in their daily skincare routine. But depending on your skin type or circumstances, you may have a preference for one or the other.

Nourish

  • Lighter texture.
  • Ideal for under makeup.
  • All skin types especially oily and combination, as it contains more jojoba oil to reduce breakouts.
  • Great for use before exercise and sport.

Enrich

  • Richer texture.
  • Can be worn as a night cream.
  • All skin types especially dry and mature contains sweet almond and soybean oils to increase radiance in mature skin.
  • Great in very dehydrated environments, such as when travelling on a plane.
  • As an energising mask.

Nourish contains more of the lighter ingredients, such as aloe vera leaf juice and jojoba oil. It therefore has a very lightweight feel on the skin.

Getting the most out of your moisturiser

Dehydrated skin won’t absorb the beneficial ingredients of your moisturiser very well. It is essential to consider the whole skincare routine, not to look at the moisturiser as a be all and end all solution.

Every step of the griffin+row skincare routine has been designed with hydration in mind. Each step builds on the previous step to make the final step of moisturisation more effective.

griffin+row Nourish and Enrich are moisturisers that protect the skin from dehydration, neutralise free radicals and nurture the skin’s natural defence against ageing. Your moisturiser will work more efficiently if you first follow steps one to three of the griffin+row skincare routine: Step 1: Cleanse – Removes oil, dirt and makeup from the skin without dehydrating, as it is pH balanced and won’t strip or damage your skin’s protective acid mantle. Step 2: Exfoliate – Dead skin cells build up causing congestion and blocking pores, which are absorption pathways. Our Exfoliate cloth gently and evenly removes these surface cells, clearing the way for better absorption of the moisturiser. Step 3: Hydrate – Softens the surface cells and prepares the skin to receive the moisturiser by infusing the skin with additional natural moisturising factors (NMFs), which bind the moisturising ingredients to the skin end enhance rapid absorption of your moisturiser.

Artificial fragrances in skincare

Skincare products often have an ingredient listed as “fragrance” or “parfum”. The term was originally used to protect signature scents, as manufacturers didn’t want to reveal their secret formulations. Nowadays, the terms “fragrance” or “parfum” are more often used as a loophole to hide ingredients the manufacturer doesn’t want to disclose. This can include hundreds of chemicals, often chemicals that have nothing to do with the aroma, such as preservatives and phthalates, suspected carcinogenic substances, allergens and irritants. Essential oils are derived from the fragrant part of a whole plant and are incredibly expensive to produce compared to chemical fragrances, which are synthetic copies of the major chemical constituents of the natural oil. Essential oils can cost tens of thousands of dollars per kilogram, while artificial fragrances often cost less than a hundred dollars.

Of the population surveyed, 47.2% were not aware that a “fragrance” in a product is typically a chemical mixture of several dozen to several hundred chemicals, 68.6% were not aware that fragrance chemicals do not need to be fully disclosed on the product label or material safety data sheet, 68.9% were not aware that fragranced products typically emit hazardous air pollutants such as formaldehyde, and 73.7% were not aware that even so-called natural, green, and organic fragranced products typically emit hazardous air pollutants.1

- Investigative study by Prof A Steinemann -

If the terms “fragrance” or “parfum” appear on a skincare label, you will have no way of knowing what’s in your skincare. Ask yourself: what does the manufacturer want to hide from you?

It goes without saying that at griffin+row we do not use terms such as “fragrance” or “parfum”. Instead, we list each and every ingredient, so you know exactly what’s in the product.
